Face Adrenalin

All men die, but not all men truly live. - William Wallace, 1270-1305

God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ... And what country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure. - Thomas Jefferson, Nov. 13, 1787

Everbody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die. - Peter Tosh, 1943-1987

In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. - Martin Luther King, Jr, 1929-1968

Facts and Fallacies http://crossfitbalboa.com/blog.php?id=1089

Dr. Eric Cobb put it best:

"Strength training cements your current levels of posture and mobility." Simple yet profound.

Think about an Olympic lifter who has great mobility in the ankles, knees, hips, and thoracic spine. Once they have developed that mobility, strength training reinforces it, cementing that good movement throughout a full range of motion. In fact, assuming your technique stays solid at heavier weights, this will only further reinforce quality movement.

Yolked http://crossfitbalboa.com/blog.php?id=801

I was sitting at breakfast the other day and noticed the people around me ordering egg white omlettes. Shaking my head I realized I once was in the same boat...i thought i could stay lean and avoid high cholestrol by not eating the yolks from eggs. How wrong was I? I would have been better served justing eating the yolk and throwing the egg white away. The yolk is without a doubt the most nutritious part of the egg. The majority of the vitamins, including all of the fat-soluble ones (A, D, E, and K) are in the yolk. A yolk is one of the few foods that have high levels of vitamin D. Half of the protein is in the yolk. All of the choline, a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, is in the yolk.

But isn't all the fat and cholesterol are in the yolk? That is why someone would think to throw it away. Isn't fat and cholestrol bad for us? No it isn't! Cholesterol is the building block of many structures in the body and its presence in the blood usually means that it is trying to repair some damage done to the artery walls, not by cholesterol itself, but probably by a high carb (and therefore high sugar and high insulin) diet. That cholesterol is present in the lesions on the walls is correlation without causation.

When i go to the store I find many different varieties of eggs. White and brown eggs...large and extra large eggs...cage free and free range eggs...eggs with omega-3. It is all very confusing, so what eggs should I buy? It is recommended that you purchase cage free omega-3 eggs. The eggs with omega-3 are from chickens fed a diet of flax. This medium change omega-3 doesnt work well in our bodies but when fed to chickens the flax converts into a long chain omega-3 and thus very healthy. We have sung the benefits of having a diet rich in omega-3's and this is just another way to sneak omega-3 into your diet.

High Levels of Omega-6 and Depression http://crossfitbalboa.com/blog.php?id=793

In wake of my thoughts on depression, suicide and a vegetarian diet I thought i would share an article posted on Natural News concerning high levels of omega-6 being linked to depression and heart disease.

...Among those who were depressed, a higher omega-6-to-omega-3 ratio was found to correlate with the level of depressive symptoms...
The study authors said that the average hunter-gatherer diet provides a ratio of two or three to one, compared with the modern Western ratio of 15-17:1.
Participants who were depressed also had higher blood levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6 and other compounds known to cause inflammation. These compounds have been linked to arthritis, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and other health problems. Researcher Janice K. Kiecolt-Glaser calls them "all-purpose 'nasties' for aging."

We know that the westernized diet is closer to a 30-40:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3. We know that a diet rich in omega-6 is a diet rich in grains. Corn, wheat and barley are rich in omega-6; a diet rich in grains and low in foods high in omega-3, like seafood and grass fed beef, leads to depression. In addition, we have found beef raised on a diet of grain have a higher fat content and much higher omega-6 levels. In contrast, grass fed beef is lower in fat content and higher in omega-3, thus much healthier.

So...if you want to increase mental and physical health and keep from "brushing your teeth with a .45" (Andy Stumpf) then head to the butcher...order a big porterhouse steak...fire up the grill and eat a diet rich in omega-3.

IF and Obesity http://crossfitbalboa.com/blog.php?id=792

Robb Wolf has some interesting thoughts about Intermittent Fasting and Obese People. Robb states "Ironically the population that might benefit the most from IF is a group that really needs to be cautious with implementation. Overweight individuals are by definition insulin resistant. This peridiabetic condition lends itself to severe blood sugar crashes when feedings are not consistent. Thus these individuals must eat every 2-3 hours or face severe mood swings, lethargy and for some the difficult to remedy condition of DEATH. Why? Severe insulin resistance can prevent the facilitated diffusion of ketones through membranes such as the blood-brain barrier. This can lead to the condition ketoacidosis, which is often characterized by both high blood glucose and high blood ketone concentrations. This can lead to a low blood pH…and that can be very bad. What to do? Reestablish euglycemia by implementing a paleo/Zone or cyclic low carb diet. As insulin sensitivity is reestablished brief fasts should be both safe and therapeutic. Keep in mind that insulin resistance has two major contributors. The first is chronically high insulin levels which tend to down regulate the number of insulin receptors. The second factor involves damage to the insulin receptors themselves via non-enzyme mediated glycation due to chronically high blood glucose levels. Individuals with hyperinsulinism not only have fewer insulin receptors but the few they have are in effect broken. That considered, a therapeutic fast could be one of the most effective means of re-establishing insulin sensitivity; however, if the pathology is of sufficient magnitude, ketoacidosis and The Big Nap could occur."

What we can conclude is intermittent fasting aids a healthy body. If a person is insulin sensitive, due to being overweight or through diet, IF can cause problems. Fasting and not eating every 2-3 hours can cause a drop in blood glucose levels and can lead to sickness in an unhealthy individual.

IGF-1 and Milk http://crossfitbalboa.com/blog.php?id=785

The practice of drinking a gallon of whole milk a day to gain weight and strength makes sense...lots of calories, protein and fat. A gallon of milk has about 3600 calories, so if an individual drank a gallon a day he would be picking up an extra pound of body weight. But what else is in the milk that might lend claim to this increase in size and strength? I found this information concerning what is else is in milk other than just protein and fat.

This information was reported in Milkweed. High levels of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) are found in milk. Milk from cows injected with rbGH have significantly higher levels of IGF-1 than normal cow's milk. Injecting synthetic growth hormones in milk cows increases their production of 1GF-1, a powerful "secondary" hormone responsible for muscle growth and increased growth hormone levels. IGF-1 is exactly the same in bovines and humans and spurs cellular growth function.

rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone) is a genetically engineered, potent variant of the natural growth hormone produced by cows, Manufactured by Monsanto, it is sold to dairy farmers under the trade name POSILAC. Injection of ths hormone forces cows to increase their milk production by about 10%.

What is Insulin-like Growth Factor-1?

IGF1 is a polypeptide hormone about the same size as insulin, or 70 amino acids; it´s a type of growth factor. It´s a highly anabolic hormone released primarily in the liver (but also in peripheral tissues) with the stimulus of growth hormone (GH). It is responsible for much of the anabolic activity of GH, including nitrogen retention and protein synthesis as well as muscle cell hyperplasia (increase in number of muscle cells), as well as mitogenesis (the growth of new muscle fibers). It can also induce skeletal muscle hypertrophy by activating the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-Akt pathway(9). In fact, IGF-1 acts on several different tissues to enhance growth via several mechanisms.

So it seems that the rBGh given to milk cows increases their levels of IGF-1. These high levels of IGF-1 are passed into the milk and onto the consumer. Their is no difference between bovine and human IGF-1, so we could expect that the muscle building properties of IGF-1 are present when drinking large amounts of whole milk from milk cows treated with rBGH. This would translate into an increase in strength...muscle and size gain. I guess Rip was onto something when he recommended a gallon a day of whole milk!

Fats Is Your Friend http://crossfitbalboa.com/blog.php?id=781

I have provided three great insights about our friend...Fat.

"Fats from animal and vegetable sources provide a concentrated source of energy in the diet; they also provide the building blocks for cell membranes and a variety of hormones and hormonelike substances. Fats as part of a meal slow down absorption so that we can go longer without feeling hungry. In addition, they act as carriers for important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Dietary fats are needed for the conversion of carotene to vitamin A, for mineral absorption and for a host of other processes..." click to continue
